Robotic Arm Control using PIC Microcontroller

In this tutorial we will use the industry standard PIC16F877A 8-bit Microcontroller to control the same robotic arm with potentiometers. The challenge with this project is that PIC16F877A has only two PWN capable pins, but we need to control about 5 servo motors for our robot which requires 5 individual PWM pins. So we have to utilize the GPIO pins and generate PWM signals on PIC GPIO pins using the timer interrupts. Now, of course we could upgrade to a better microcontroller or use a de-multiplexer IC to make things a lot easier here. But still, it is worth giving this project a try for the learning experience.

I wanted to improve my b-roll for showing off 3D prints and more detailed items so I decided to build my own turntable with controls for speed and direction. It can run on battery or via USB and the actual turntable portion can easily pop off and be printed in other colors, shapes or sizes.

I use a lot of NeoPixels in projects and I’m always trying to pick the perfect color for them, whether they’re recieving communications from the Upside Down or bouncing along to music in my computer case. This project allows you to adjust the RGB values of a NeoPixel strip in real time to see exactly which values you need to plug into your code to get certain colors.

The stock spool holder that comes with the Prusa MK2S was getting the job done but I wanted something with a little bit more stability and better compatibility with different sized spools. This spool holder by IshmaelPR1 on Thingiverse is a really awesome design and it’s been serving me well so far. It also makes color swap prints very easy.

I printed in ABS for strength. You do need four 608 skateboard bearings and because of fidget spinner-ageddon there are almost too many varieties of these on Amazon with high variance in quality. Luckily Adafruit has a four pack and that’s what I used: https://www.adafruit.com/product/1178
